Staying with us
We keep a few spaces for people who want to spend time here: volunteers, visiting teachers, friends of the community, families passing through. Have a look at what is free, pick your dates, and we will hold them for you.
Our spaces
The AWI Hostel
A bed in a six-bed room beside the musalla, with a shared kitchen, a balcony over the school, and the garden on one side and the city on the other. Single sex for the nights you are in it.

ViewAre you coming as a volunteer?
Volunteer stays are arranged with us in advance, and we do not ask you to donate for the room. The work you do here is the contribution, and we are not going to ask you for both.
What we do ask is a suggested US$50 towards the administration of the volunteer programme. Once per stay, whichever space you are in and however long you are here. It covers the paperwork and the coordination that goes into having you, and like every figure on this page it is suggested rather than charged.
Two small things still apply. If the space needs cleaning after you leave beyond the usual turnaround, we will sort that out with you in person before you go. And anything broken or damaged should be reported to us so we can work out the cost together.

House rules
The same across all of our spaces. Worth a read before you pick your dates. there is nothing surprising in here.
Each space also has its own staying agreement, which needs signing before you arrive, volunteers included. You will find it on the page for whichever space you are booking.
Donations and tax
Casa Umar does not charge for stays. Your dates are confirmed before any donation is discussed, and your stay goes ahead whether or not you give. Donations help with the maintenance and running of all of Casa Umar's programmes, and go towards the administration costs of the project. All figures on this page are in US dollars. Donations are taken in USD, so if your card is in another currency your bank will convert it.
Donations are made to 16 North Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit incorporated in Delaware, USA. A receipt is issued automatically for every donation. Donations may be tax-deductible for US taxpayers only. They do not qualify for tax relief in the United Kingdom or in Mexico.
Whether you can claim anything at all depends on your own circumstances and where you file. Please check with your own tax adviser rather than relying on this page.
Damage and breakages
Tell us if something breaks. We will work out the cost together and add it to your stay. Accidents happen, and we would much rather know than find out later.
Leave it as you found it
Dishes done, rubbish out, beds stripped. A cleaning day is held after every stay, but that is for the turnaround, not for clearing up after you.
The communal garden
Shared with the families and neighbours around it, so treat it as you would a friend's. Pick up after yourself and leave it as you found it. Then enjoy it properly. It is one of the loveliest parts of being in Chiapas.
Quiet after 10 pm
Families live here and the school starts early. Evenings are welcome; late noise carries further than you would think in the highlands.
Guests and visitors
Tell us who is coming and how many. If you would like to bring someone extra during your stay, just ask first.
Smoking and alcohol
Neither is used on the grounds. There is no penalty attached to this. It is simply how the community lives, and we ask visitors to respect it.
