Rumi’s Retreat & Casa Umar

A meeting of hearts rooted in land, community, and spiritual companionship.

This April, Rumi’s Retreats invites you to join a service-based gathering in Chiapas, Mexico, co-hosted with Casa Umar.

Since 2011, Rumi’s Cave, a London-based community rooted in service and relationships, has brought people together through shared practice, conversation, and time spent in sincere company. Over the years, they have facilitated retreats across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, including accompanying trips on Hajj and Umrah. At its core, Rumi’s Cave’s work is heart-centred and relational, grounded in spirituality and reflection.

This gathering continues that tradition in a new setting. Hosted at Casa Umar, the retreat brings Rumi’s approach to spiritual companionship into a living, community-based environment, where service, daily life, and reflection are woven together in a simple and meaningful way.

Rather than a conventional retreat, this is an invitation into service as devotion: showing up with care, humility, and presence, while taking part in the rhythms of land, community, and shared effort.

  • Hands-on projects that last
Participants will contribute directly to on-the-ground projects at Casa Umar — including restoring and strengthening our garden space, and helping prepare outdoor areas that will continue to serve the community long after the retreat ends.

    Daily life, not performance
Alongside the work, participants will share in the everyday rhythm of the region: cooking together, caring for the land, hiking, learing and sharing meals. This is an invitation into presence, not performance.

*Service days are kept to around five hours, with time set aside for rest and independent exploration.

  • Woven throughout the retreat will be time set aside for exploration and discovery.

Participants will join guided hikes through the surrounding forests, hills, and natural landscapes of Chiapas, offering space to experience the land beyond the project sites. Alongside time in nature, there will be opportunities for excursions and relaxed city exploration, including visits to nearby towns, markets, and cultural sites.

These days help balance the retreat, adding moments of beauty, curiosity, and shared enjoyment while deepening connection to the region.

  • Alongside the practical project work, the retreat will be supported by spiritual guidance from a qualified, internationally recognised Imam.

From the opening of the day through its closing moments, time will be held for sacred wisdom readings, reflection, and remembrance. These moments may take place at different points throughout the day, offering grounding before work begins and space to reflect as days come to a close.

The guidance will draw from spiritual texts (to be confirmed), providing a gentle frame for the retreat — allowing service, shared effort, and daily life to be held within a wider spiritual context, without imposing rigid structure or fixed timings.
